The Eminence in Shadow – Season 1 (2022–2023)

A Fantasy Where Delusions Become Reality

The Eminence in Shadow Season 1 delivers one of the most creative takes on the isekai genre by following a protagonist who has no desire to become a traditional hero. Instead, Cid Kagenou dreams of living as a mysterious mastermind who secretly controls events from the shadows while remaining unknown to the world. What begins as an elaborate fantasy unexpectedly becomes reality when every conspiracy Cid invents turns out to be true.

Based on the light novel series by Daisuke Aizawa, the season blends action, fantasy, comedy, and parody into a unique story filled with stylish battles, memorable characters, and hilarious misunderstandings. While Cid believes everyone is simply acting along with his role-playing, Shadow Garden wages a genuine war against the sinister Cult of Diablos, creating one of modern anime's most entertaining examples of dramatic irony.

Animated by Nexus, Season 1 introduces the world, the Seven Shadows, and the mysterious organization that unknowingly stands between humanity and an ancient evil. Behind the comedy lies an engaging fantasy adventure filled with political conspiracies, magical battles, and the rise of one of anime's most unconventional protagonists.

Story Summary

Cid Kagenou has always dreamed of becoming an "eminence in shadow"—a mysterious figure who secretly manipulates the world from behind the scenes without ever receiving recognition. After dying in modern Japan, he is reincarnated into a fantasy world where magic exists, giving him the perfect opportunity to pursue that dream.

As a child, Cid rescues a cursed elf girl whom he names Alpha. To entertain himself, he invents a story about an ancient organization known as the Cult of Diablos, claiming it secretly controls the world from the shadows. Believing it to be nothing more than role-playing, he forms a fictional group called Shadow Garden to fight this imaginary enemy.

To Cid's complete surprise—though he never realizes it—the Cult of Diablos actually exists.

Alpha discovers that Cid's fabricated story is entirely true and dedicates herself to eliminating the cult. She recruits six extraordinary warriors—Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, and Eta—forming the legendary Seven Shadows. Together, they expand Shadow Garden into a powerful secret organization operating across multiple kingdoms.

Meanwhile, Cid continues living a double life. At school, he deliberately acts as an average noble student, hiding his incredible abilities to maintain the appearance of a background character. Under the identity of Shadow, however, he effortlessly defeats powerful enemies, dismantles criminal organizations, and uncovers conspiracies that threaten the entire continent.

Throughout the season, Cid becomes involved with Princess Alexia Midgar, Princess Rose Oriana, and numerous influential figures whose lives are changed by Shadow's mysterious interventions. Every dramatic entrance, cryptic speech, and overwhelming display of power strengthens Shadow's legendary reputation, while Cid remains convinced that everyone is simply participating in his fantasy.

As Shadow Garden uncovers more of the Cult of Diablos' operations, the conflict grows increasingly dangerous. Terrorist attacks, political conspiracies, ancient experiments, and powerful warriors reveal that the world faces a far greater threat than anyone imagined.

Despite the escalating danger, Cid never loses sight of his dream. Rather than seeking fame or recognition, he continues perfecting his role as the mysterious mastermind who appears only when the world needs him most. By the end of the season, Shadow Garden has become one of the world's most influential organizations, while Cid unknowingly stands at the center of an ancient conflict that will continue to unfold in Season 2.
