Shangri-La Frontier – Season 1 (2023)
The Beginning of the Ultimate VR Adventure
Shangri-La Frontier Season 1 introduces one of modern anime’s most refreshing takes on the VRMMO genre by combining high-level action, competitive gaming strategy, comedy, and massive fantasy world-building into a fast-paced adventure series.
Based on the manga written by Katarina and illustrated by Ryosuke Fuji, the anime adaptation by Studio C2C quickly became popular for its energetic combat animation, game-inspired mechanics, and unique protagonist.
Unlike many VR fantasy anime focused on survival or life-or-death situations, Shangri-La Frontier embraces the joy of gaming itself.
The story follows Rakuro Hizutome, a gamer obsessed with clearing terrible low-quality “trash games”. After mastering countless broken and frustrating titles, he finally decides to try a globally popular masterpiece VR game known as Shangri-La Frontier.
What begins as casual curiosity rapidly turns into a large-scale adventure involving:
- Legendary monsters
- Hidden quests
- Unique world events
- Competitive players
- Rare discoveries
- Some of the hardest battles in the game

Story Summary
Rakuro Hizutome is famous among hardcore gamers for one unusual reason:
he specializes in clearing terrible games filled with bugs, broken mechanics, and unfair systems.
After surviving countless “trash games,” he decides to challenge the massively popular VRMMO Shangri-La Frontier, a game praised for its near-perfect design, massive world, and realistic combat systems.
Using the player name Sunraku, Rakuro enters the game with almost no preparation and immediately ignores the standard beginner routes.
Instead of slowly leveling through safe tutorial zones, Sunraku begins exploring dangerous high-level areas while relying on instincts developed from years of surviving unfair games.
His unconventional playstyle quickly separates him from ordinary players.
Early in the season, Sunraku accidentally encounters one of the game’s legendary Unique Monsters:
Lycagon the Nightslayer.
The battle becomes one of the most important moments of the season.
Although Sunraku survives, he receives a permanent curse mark that cannot be removed normally.
Rather than weakening the story, the curse becomes a defining symbol of Sunraku’s reputation and unlocks access to hidden content few players even know exists.
This leads directly into the mysterious Rabituza storyline, where Sunraku encounters Emul and gains access to an incredibly rare unique scenario connected to the deeper secrets of the game world.
The season gradually expands beyond simple monster hunting as hidden lore, legendary NPCs, and exclusive questlines begin appearing around Sunraku.
At the same time, other skilled players enter the story including:
- Arthur Pencilgon
- Oikatzo
- Psyger-0
Each character brings different gaming styles, strategies, and competitive energy into the series.
One of Season 1’s biggest strengths is how naturally it captures real gaming culture.
The anime emphasizes:
- Build experimentation
- Raid preparation
- PvP rivalries
- Boss mechanics
- Rare item hunting
- Multiplayer coordination
Rather than treating the game world as fantasy reality, the series constantly reminds viewers that these characters genuinely love gaming.
The season’s climax focuses on the legendary raid battle against Wethermon the Tombguard, one of the most difficult bosses in the game.
To defeat him, Sunraku teams up with his old gaming allies Arthur Pencilgon and Oikatzo in an intense strategic raid requiring perfect timing, teamwork, and adaptation.
The battle becomes one of the anime’s defining moments due to its scale, animation quality, and tactical gameplay focus.
By the end of the season, Sunraku and his allies accomplish something considered nearly impossible:
they become the first players in the server to defeat a Unique Boss.
Their victory changes the game world itself and sets the stage for even larger conflicts in future seasons.
