Overlord – Season 1 (2015)

Overlord Season 1 (2015)

The Beginning of Nazarick’s Rule

Overlord Season 1 introduces one of the most iconic overpowered protagonists in anime history while establishing the dark fantasy atmosphere that would later define the franchise.

Unlike traditional isekai stories where heroes are transported into fantasy worlds to save others, Overlord follows a protagonist who slowly becomes the most feared ruler in the world itself.

Based on the light novels written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin, the anime adaptation by Studio Madhouse blends fantasy warfare, political manipulation, psychological intimidation, and MMORPG-inspired world-building into a story centered around power and conquest.

Season 1 focuses heavily on the mysterious Great Tomb of Nazarick, the terrifying loyalty of its guardians, and Ainz Ooal Gown’s gradual transformation from an ordinary player into a legendary undead ruler.

Rather than asking how a hero survives another world, Overlord asks something far darker:

What happens when the strongest being in the world stops pretending to be human?

Story Summary

The story begins inside the virtual reality MMORPG Yggdrasil, a once-popular online game preparing to shut down permanently.

Momonga, the guild master of Ainz Ooal Gown and one of the strongest players in the game, decides to remain logged in until the final moments inside the Great Tomb of Nazarick — the guild’s legendary headquarters filled with powerful NPC guardians.

However, after the shutdown time passes, something impossible happens.

The game world does not disappear.

Instead, Momonga discovers that:

  • NPCs have become sentient
  • Magic and combat feel real
  • Pain and emotion now exist naturally
  • He cannot log out

Taking the name Ainz Ooal Gown, he begins investigating this mysterious new world while maintaining the image of an all-knowing supreme ruler before Nazarick’s guardians.

At first, Ainz simply wants answers about what happened and whether other players still exist somewhere in the world.

But as the season progresses, his undead body slowly suppresses his human emotions while Nazarick’s guardians begin worshipping him like a god.

This creates one of the anime’s most fascinating dynamics:
Ainz internally struggles with uncertainty while externally appearing like a flawless mastermind.

Season 1 carefully develops Nazarick and its terrifying hierarchy including:

  • Albedo
  • Demiurge
  • Shalltear Bloodfallen
  • Cocytus
  • Aura
  • Mare

Each guardian possesses overwhelming power and absolute loyalty toward Ainz, often interpreting even his smallest actions as genius-level strategy.

As Ainz explores the outside world, he creates the armored adventurer identity “Momon” to gather information without revealing Nazarick’s existence.

These adventures introduce:

  • Human kingdoms
  • Adventurer guilds
  • Corrupt nobles
  • Dangerous monsters
  • Political instability
  • Religious organizations

The contrast between Nazarick’s overwhelming power and ordinary society becomes increasingly clear.

While humans struggle against monsters and survival itself, Nazarick possesses magical abilities and military strength capable of destroying entire nations.

One of the season’s most important conflicts begins when Shalltear Bloodfallen unexpectedly falls under enemy mind control.

Forced to confront one of Nazarick’s strongest guardians personally, Ainz enters a devastating magical battle that becomes one of the franchise’s most iconic moments.

The conflict also reveals a terrifying possibility:
Other powerful beings or former players may still exist somewhere in the world.

By the end of the season, Ainz fully embraces his role as ruler of Nazarick while beginning preparations for much larger plans involving influence, expansion, and conquest across the continent.

Popularity & Reception

Overlord Season 1 became one of the defining isekai anime of the modern era thanks to its darker protagonist perspective and large-scale fantasy world-building.

Fans praised the season for:

  • Ainz’s intimidating presence
  • Nazarick’s memorable guardians
  • Dark fantasy atmosphere
  • Strategic storytelling
  • Political tension
  • Psychological depth

Ainz Ooal Gown quickly became one of anime’s most recognizable overpowered protagonists due to his calm intelligence and overwhelming magical abilities.

The season’s success also helped popularize darker isekai stories centered around antiheroes and villain protagonists rather than traditional fantasy heroes.

Even years after release, Season 1 remains one of the strongest introductions in modern fantasy anime.

Final Thoughts

Overlord Season 1 succeeds because it completely changes the perspective of the isekai genre.

Instead of following a hero trying to save a fantasy world, the anime explores the rise of an overwhelmingly powerful ruler whose existence alone reshapes kingdoms, politics, and entire civilizations.

Ainz’s internal struggle between human uncertainty and undead authority gives the story psychological depth beyond simple domination.

Combined with strong world-building, memorable guardians, dark fantasy atmosphere, and strategic storytelling, the season established Overlord as one of the defining fantasy anime of the modern era.

As later seasons continue expanding Nazarick’s influence across the continent, Season 1 remains the foundation that introduced audiences to one of anime’s most terrifying kingdoms.
